Kaits Art. Vintage. Home
On a sunny Saturday in Pleasant Hill I stumbled upon the a little vintage shop tucked just behind Contra Costa Blvd. A sign caught my, 'KAITS' spelled out in steel letters that would make Joanna Gaines herself swoon. As I peaked in the doors from the street I saw glimpses of chalk paints, vintage tables and wooden signs. Before I knew it I was making laps around the cutest shop I've ever set my feet in and was chatting it up with the owner herself, Kait.
The shop has layers of texture, dimension, and nods to several era's. The style is true to California Country Chic with a touch of home-made charm. Now, there is something about vintage shops in general that I have a bit of a tough time with, as a shopper. Since many stores have several vendors split into sections I feel confined to explore one area at a time. Each space feels like a new store, has a different personality, a different customer. I like to take long walks around shops and explore each item, and because this shop is all curated by Kait - her personality shines through - much better than at a vendor based shop.
The layers of decor ranging from materials of glass, wood, ceramic, wax, metal, cotton and leather - all compliment each other and have a simple, but refined style. But from my first lap my eye was set on a large, rustic bird house made of reclaimed wood. I learned a little more about Kait, a Cal Poly graduate who studied wine and viticulture, who just so happened to love art. After graduation she came back home to Pleasant Hill and started hosting painting parties. She reconnected with the community she grew up in and enjoyed leading groups through a variety of artistic journeys. While she worked, Kait met artisans who created a great variety of goods that she loved.
When space opened up in her family's shop she created a business plan and presented it to the her parents. A home decor shop that carried goods created by herself and from local vendors; candles from Oakland, soaps from the Bay Area and purses from San Diego. As her business began to grow she rented out more space in the building for an art studio and continued to expand her scope of painting parties. Fast forward to the Saturday I met her, and Kait's store was celebrating their ONE YEAR anniversary! I was happy to make the birdhouse her first purchase of the day and bring a new treasure to my home. She was sweet enough to let me come by and take some photos of her collection!
Connecting with community artisans and business owners is one of the reasons I started The Dreamers Society. I can't wait to see Kait celebrate 10 years in the industry, see where her passion for sharing others talents and helping individuals explore their own will take her! This holiday season remember to keep her shop in mind and shop local.
