Pokemon Go for Business

Pokemon Go for Business

The Bay Area is getting active all thanks to Pokemon Go. Unlike other video games, it requires walking as a main component of game play. If you want to do, just about anything in the game, you have to walk. Check out this quote from a MobileHealthNews:

Pokémon Go uses the player’s phone camera and GPS, so players must move around in order to advance. One player even logged 24 miles over the course of a couple of days walking around San Francisco.

PokemonGo keeps trending on all social sites and many brands are jumping on board - to the extent that they can. Even Monterey Bay Aquarium is making posts about it!

"Recently spotted by staffer and Pokémon trainer Claudia Tibbs in our Kelp Forest exhibit, Krabby is a water-type Pokémon frequently found on beaches near the edge of fresh and saltwater. This species is easily identified by its large red pincers, which it uses for balance and combat." Said Monterey Bay Aquarium on their Facebook Page

So as a brick and mortar business, what is it to you? Well, this game has two major types of checkpoints - Pokestops and Gyms. Each of these checkpoints are needed for players to advance. Additionally, they tend to be located in popular locations like malls, stores, downtown, places of worship, schools - gathering places that people actually go to.

No, you don't need to download the game and create a business profile. No, there is no reputation to manage or followers to be made. But, there are customers that could be 'caught!'

Gotta Catch 'em All!

Here are the top things you can promote on Social Media and on your storefront as a business owner:

  1. Offer an outlet: This augmented reality games drains battery from using GPS and camera elements of the mobile device. Charging stations are invaluable.

  2. Food and Drink! These travelers need fuel! Incentive for users, like a free fountain drink with purchase, for Pokemon players will help to get them in your store over others.

  3. Let them know what kind of Pokemon are spawning in their area. (If you don't play, ask one of your employees, they can probably tell you.) Different types of Pokemon appear in different regions, so someone may go out of their way for the chance to catch a specific type.

  4. Offer discounts to Pokemon Trainer Teams (Blue, Yellow or Red - Read more about teams from Polygon) Different gyms can be claimed by teams, and help defended or taken over. This is the closest form of 'friends' that is integrated into the game.

  5. Host a meet-up! Offer your business as a meeting (and/or ending) spot for a Pokemon Go meet up! Some meet ups gather hundreds of people are meeting together at a time to walk a park or mall to catch Pokemon!

Like every mobile game before it, Pokemon Go may be doomed to die... eventually. Some great indicators of strength is the long time fans, people nearing 30 years old who still play on their gameboy. Kids are still interested too, so you two whole generations ready and willing to play. Consumers have been ready for this game for a long time. Additionally, the developers have made smart choices on frequency of pokemon appearing, pokestops being reloaded and the number of gyms in each area.

While Pokemon is trending hard, I suggest your business, especially if it has a physical location, should make SOME kind of effort to tap in. The easiest thing you can do, as a coffee shop or restaurant - is to tag #pokemongo and #pokemonmeetup along with a geo tag .. like #walnutcreek! Do a little research, or ask the young lady you hired to man the cash register, to see what kind of language to post.

Are you playing Pokemon Go?
